Intelligent Training for Distance Runners

After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University, Pete went on to earn a Master's in Business Administration from Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management. Wanting to better understand the physiology of human performance, he later enrolled at the University of Massachusetts Department of Exercise Science, where he focused his studies on exercise physiology and wrote his thesis on the reliability of lactate measurement during exercise.

From 1997 to 2000, Pete served as the Manager and Exercise Physiology Lab Director at the UniSports Center for Sport Performance, the commercial sports-performance division of the University of Auckland's Sport and Exercise Science Department. In this role, he conducted physiological tests on, and provided training advice for, elite athletes in a wide variety of disciplines, with a focus on distance runners and triathletes. He also coordinated the national sports-science program for Triathlon New Zealand.

Since July 2000, Pete has been General Manager of the New Zealand Academy of Sport North in Auckland. Here, Pete manages sports medicine and sports science services for a high-performance sport center serving over 500 elite and developing athletes in 20 sports. The focus of this program is the development of athletes for the Olympics, World Championships, and Commonwealth Games. In this role, Pete coordinates a network of over 100 sports medicine professionals - doctors, physical therapists, chiropractors, and podiatrists - and 60 sports-science providers - exercise physiologists, sport nutritionists, sport psychologists, biomechanists, and conditioning specialists - to ensure the effective delivery of services to athletes and coaches.
